Policies to Follow for
Tanning Salons
Many health care providers, including
physicians and other members of medical groups
have become involved in campaigns to report some
of the dangers of UV rays. These health care
providers realize the importance of getting
their message out to the general public to
attempt to reduce the current epidemic of skin
cancer. Worldwide campaigns have been instituted
by these health care providers to encourage
people to reduce their exposure to ultraviolet
light, and therefore, decrease the outbreak of
skin cancer. In general, surveys indicate that
the public has been educated through these
efforts. However, despite this increased
awareness, more people than ever before are
tanning themselves, both indoors and outdoors.
The indoor tanning parlor is a popular method to
achieve a tan in a short period of time. Many
women will take advantage of this if the have an
upcoming special event to attend, such as a
wedding, vacation or class reunion.
Many young women feel that having a suntan is an
attribute to their social life. However, these
same young women do not look at the risks of
achieving and maintaining a suntan. They
certainly have a greater risk of developing
photo-aging qualities of the skin in later life,
as well as skin cancer than may not be revealed
for years. But these young women are not looking
down the road, they merely want to achieve that
suntanned appearance now. These are the
conditions by which the indoor tanning industry
has, and probably will continue to, grow. The
industry tends to market their services to young
people who desire that bronzed healthy glow in a
very short period of time. Since a suntan gives
that healthy appearance, the tanning industry
capitalizes on that look and may even make such
claims to indicate that indoor tanning is
healthy, and not harmless.
The tanning industry should be regulated at both
the state and national levels so that false
claims made about their products can be
prevented. The public needs to be continually
hear the message by the health care industry
that the effects of indoor and outdoor tanning
can be harmful. It is especially important that
the young people hear this message.
