Sun Tanning Risks

Tanning has always been a no-no for public health experts as well as many medical professionals. However, many people still tan every day, either outside or with indoor tanning beds. In fact, more people now than ever go tanning, even with all the warnings against it. With the increased cases of skin cancer since people have exposed themselves to UV rays, either outdoors or with indoor tanning beds, many researchers believe that the exposure to UV radiation is a large cause in developing skin cancer.

Tanning beds, like the sun, emit harmful UV radiation. Although we all know that UV radiation isn’t good for us in large amounts, researchers are now finding that UV exposure is linked with melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer that can result in death. The cases of melanoma have been on a rise in the U.S. in the past few years, with an estimated 20% of the cases resulting in death. Besides skin cancer worries, UV can also damage the immune system and cause premature aging. In earlier days when the effects of UV radiation weren’t well-known, many people associated a sun-tanned person as a healthy and fit person. Due to this, many people still associate a sun-tanned person as such, although it really isn’t so.

Many people who promote the use of tanning beds usually argue that sunlight is good for us, which isn’t entirely false. Sunlight is essential in having our bodies produce Vitamin D; however, only a small amount of sunlight is needed to do so. Therefore, take precautions in covering yourself up and using sunscreen of at least 15 SPF to protect yourself from getting too much sun.
