Cont: How to Start Up your
Tanning Salon 6
Buck/Boost Transformers: The voltages of the
tanning beds vary a great deal. Most salons have
three phase 208V services. The 208V is a nominal
rating, it can actually vary from 205V to 215V.
However, most commercial tanning beds only
operate correctly if the voltage is at least
220V, and most beds are rated 220V to 230V.
The buck/boost transformer is essentially a
voltage stepping device. Depending on the
transformer itself, it will actually adjust the
incoming voltage, either up or down. it is a
common misconception that they adjust and go up
and down as the voltage changes. They are
actually a fixed ratio machine, and if it is
designed to raise your voltage 10%, that's what
it will do. They are not a continuously voltage
correcting device.
The actual voltage at your particular location
will need to be measured so that you know what
kind of a buck/boost transformer you need. You
will also see a drop in the voltage when several
tanning beds are operating at once. It will
probably be best to use a transformer that will
raise your current voltage to the 235V range,
such that when it is fully loaded, it will give
you a full 230V.
There are some warning signs which indicate that
you need a transformer such as the lamps will
not light, or they light up slowly or are darker
than normal. It is very important to run your
bed at the correct voltage so that it will not
become damaged and also so that you will not
void the warranty.
