Cont: How to Start Up your
Tanning Salon
Changing Your Lamps: As lamps age, they don't
usually burn out before 1000 hours, but they do
emit less UV rays and are much less effective as
they age. Therefore, a salon owner should change
the lamps when they are at approximately 80% of
their "life expectancy" rating, which means
about 800 hours for a 1,000 hour lamp; or about
700 hours for an 800 hour lamp. Statistically
this would mean changing the lamps about once a
year.
Face lamps need to be changed twice as often as
standard lamps because their small lamps
(approximately 400w) only last about 400 hours.
If you buy all of the lamps you need at one
time, usually once each year, it will save you
quite a bit of money. You will not only receive
a discount on your bulk order, but you will also
save on shipping the lamps all at once.
Maintaining Your Beds: Tanning beds should be
cleaned in their entirety about four times a
year, or about every 200 hours. They need to be
completely torn down in order to be cleaned
properly. The main components; fans, reflectors
and lamps, should be cleaned. Novus #3, a
cleaner which is similar to a soft scrub
cleaner, only finer, that is specifically for
acrylics, should be used. Use only a cleaner
specified for acrylics and scrub both sides of
both acrylics, then use a regular tanning bed
cleaner after that. It is extremely important to
only use a cleaner specified for acrylics
because the UV breaks down with time.
Remember that the tanning beds contain acrylics,
not Plexiglas. Acrylics transmit UV well,
whereas plexi does not. With the passage of
time, the acrylics will gradually become opaque
to UV, and although the UV looks clear, it
starts to get blocked. The only way to solve
this problem is to use Novus #2 and strip away a
microlayer. This procedure will only take about
30 minutes per bed and will emit 20% or more UV
output. This is certainly a simple procedure to
carry out in order to help keep your customers
happy.
