How to Start Up your Tanning Salon

There are some fundamental principles and practices that new tanning salon owners should adhere to in order to maintain their tanning beds, as well as their overall business. Some of these practices can only be learned through trial and error, but you should do your best to initially learn as much as possible. The following guide is intended to give you a head start. It is based on over 20 years of experience, but every tanning salon owner will have his or her own unique experience. These guidelines will offer you some information you may need to get started in your new business.

Regulations: Most states in the US have rules and regulations that must be followed by tanning salon operators. Contact your state's regulatory agency to request the basic information, which should be available to you free of charge. Thus far, not all states are regulated, however, no matter where your business is located, you should still follow some basic guidelines and procedures to ensure a safe operation for your customers.

Compatibility of Lamps: States that have regulations for tanning facilities require that the tanning lamps be replaced in the tanning beds only with lamps that are the exact same type as the original lamps, or lamps that are "recognized equivalent." This advice should also be followed by salons that are located in non-regulated states. If these regulations are not specifically followed in regulated states, you could be compelled to replace all of your lamps with lamps that are legally compatible, which could result in a loss of business until you comply.

When purchasing lamps, always look for the ones that are legally compatible. Most of the lamps will come with a letter (or equivalent) of compatibility included with the entire case. The letter will state which lamps are compatible. Bear in mind that the purpose of these strict guidelines are to keep the customer from getting a burn due to overexposure by lamps which are too strong for a particular tanning bed or for a certain time period for the tanning session.
