High and Low Pressure Tanning Bed Comparison

Even though tanning beds have been used for several decades by the general public, many developments in the quality and technology of the beds have been made in recent years. Features have been added to the tanning bed such as those that target facial tanning, arm and side tanning and leg tanning. In addition, many comfort features have been added such as stereo speakers that the tanner can use to listen to her favorite music while passing the time in the tanning bed. This creates a relaxing atmosphere while tanning that can make the experience more enjoyable and less boring.

There are two primary types of tanning beds; these are the low pressure tanning beds and the high pressure tanning beds. Other kinds of tanning beds exist, but they are not nearly as popular.

Most tanning bed users are more familiar with the low pressure tanning beds because they are the ones that are most often used at the tanning salons. The more traditional low pressure fluorescent tubes are used in these beds which are very similar to natural sunlight. When a person tans in the indoor low pressure tanning beds, it is almost like tanning outdoors in natural sunlight. Due to this similarity, many people believe that the low pressure tanning beds are safer and healthier than the high pressure tanning beds.

A major difference between the low pressure and high pressure tanning beds is that the high pressure beds use the high pressure quartz lamps. A higher percentage of UVA rays is emitted from these high pressure quartz lamps, and it is the UVA rays that are the tanning rays. Less UVB rays are emitted from the high pressure lamps. Advantages to more UVA rays and less UVB rays is that tanning is achieved on a quicker basis, in fact six to eight times faster, and there is less chance for sunburn since it is the UVB rays that can cause sunburns.
